Leading the pack this year are Travelers, Amica, Northwestern Mutual, Kaiser Permanente, and UnitedHealthcare as the highest-rated insurance providers across all categories.
Every year, Insure.com evaluates leading insurance providers across four main segments: auto, home, life, and health coverage. Our editorial team conducts a thorough analysis that includes premium costs, AM Best’s financial strength ratings, complaint records from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and additional independent research.
To understand real customer experiences, we conducted a comprehensive survey asking policyholders about their satisfaction levels, how easy their insurer is to work with, and what products they offer. Survey questions covered trust levels, policy renewal intentions, digital platform quality, and overall impressions.
Using this combined research, our team evaluated over 40 insurance providers across the four primary insurance types, ultimately creating our definitive lists of top-performing carriers in each segment. We applied a star system where 5 stars represents the highest achievement.
“While finding affordable premiums matters to buyers, smart consumers look beyond price alone. Financial stability ratings, regulatory track records, and customer feedback are equally critical,” explains David Marlett, managing director of the Brantley Risk & Insurance Center at Appalachian State University and an Insure.com editorial advisor. “Our ranking methodology combines all these elements to give consumers a complete picture when comparing insurance providers.”

Liberty Mutual and Safeco were also left out because they don’t share rate data with our partner Quadrant Information Services—a crucial component of our evaluation process. Several other recognizable brands didn’t qualify due to insufficient survey participation from their customers.

Kaiser Permanente and UnitedHealthcare shared first place in Insure.com’s 2025 Best Health Insurance Companies ranking, both achieving 4.17 out of 5 stars.
Kaiser Permanente, operating as one of America’s biggest nonprofit health plans, excelled across multiple criteria. Among all carriers we evaluated, it earned our highest rating for cost-effectiveness and received top scores from the National Committee for Quality Assurance, an organization that assesses health plans based on factors including member satisfaction.
UnitedHealthcare emerged as the most trusted carrier in our rankings. Nearly all its members indicated plans to continue their coverage and expressed willingness to recommend the company to friends and family. The insurer also achieved our second-best National Association of Insurance Commissioners complaint index rating.
While our rankings provide an excellent foundation for your insurance search, don’t make them your only resource when selecting the best policy for your needs.
“Compare multiple options and speak with local insurance agents, brokers, or companies operating in your region,” recommends Karen Collins, assistant vice president for personal lines at the American Property Casualty Insurance Association. “Local insurance professionals know your area’s unique requirements and can present various coverage choices.”
How We Ranked the Best Insurance Companies
During fall 2024, Insure.com surveyed 1,750 insurance customers. Online research firm Slice MR conducted the survey on our behalf.
Survey participants identified their current insurer and then rated them across multiple factors, including:
- Customer satisfaction
- Claims satisfaction
- Price/affordability
- Ease of service
- Policy offerings
- Digital experience
We also asked participants to answer yes or no to these statements:
- I plan to keep my coverage with my current insurance company
- I would recommend my insurance company to others
- I trust my insurance company
Our editorial team analyzed the survey data and selected the companies with the most responses for detailed evaluation.
For each insurance category, editors collected rankings and performance metrics from reputable third-party sources.
We gathered AM Best information, which evaluates financial strength, and National Association of Insurance Commissioners complaint statistics, which measure companies by complaint volume. Our team located the NAIC codes for each carrier’s underwriting companies and computed weighted average complaint indexes using annual written premium data. These NAIC complaint index scores factored into our final calculations.
Premium rate information came from Quadrant Information Services (auto and home coverage), Compulife (life coverage), and the public health marketplace (health coverage).
For health insurance specifically, we incorporated ratings from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), which assesses and scores health plans.
Working with Prof. David Marlett, Ph.D., managing director of the Brantley Risk and Insurance Center at Appalachian State University, our editors developed a scoring methodology to identify the best insurance companies in each sector.
For auto and home insurers, we applied these weighted factors:
- Survey: 40% of final score (10% customer satisfaction, 10% recommended, 10% renewal rate and 10% claims handling)
- AM Best: 25% of final score
- Annual premium: 20% of final score
- NAIC: 15% of final score
For life insurers, we applied these weighted factors:
- Survey: 60% of final score (10% customer satisfaction, 10% ease of service, 10% policy offerings, 10% recommended, 10% policy retention and 10% trust)
- AM Best: 25% of final score
- NAIC: 15% of final score
For health insurers, we applied these weighted factors:
- Survey: 60% of final score (10% customer satisfaction, 10% recommended, 10% policy retention, 10% trust, and 20% affordability)
- NCQA: 25% of final score
- NAIC: 15% of final score
Across all categories, companies received ratings between half a star and 5 stars. Every company in our rankings earned at least half a star in all categories, with 5 stars being the maximum possible score.
